Bringing random people and food together
People have been invited to join the club in all possible ways, we first invited people through a small letter box we left in shops in Somers Town, we left flyers on bikes around the station, small placards in cafés, we joined all the local groups we could find on Facebook, before eventually going viral on Instagram. We usually do this every second Wednesday of the month, in a secret location each time, Housman’s bookshop basement being one of our favourite locations. The E.L.B.C is an opportunity to talk about food, and meet people. For a bit more than an hour people share a five course meal and talk about what food means to them, discussions have covered among other things: 80’s squatter’s gourmet takeaway, dad’s leftover recipes, Cradle to cradle chef’s recycling strategy, the centralisation of milk after world war two and the disappearance of traditional farmhouse cheese, European union lobbies against certain chemicals, Rudolph Rocker’s soup, the leakage of Victorian sewer system and how it sustains large London Plane Tree, the revival of British cheese. We hope that this will bring together people with a common interest in food and inform our longer-term strategy to create a collaborative canteen/ kitchen in Kings Cross.
